Urania

Eldest of the muses, Urania, as with all the other muses at La Muse is the daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne, her name coming from the Greek word for ‘heavenly’ or ‘of heaven.’

In Greek mythology she was the muse of astronomy and is usually shown with a globe in her hand, dressed in a cloak with stars, her eyes and attention focused on the Heavens. Indeed her name has been used to name countless astronomical observatories all around the world.

She is able to tell the future by how the stars are aligned and is often associated with the Holy Spirit, universal love, the heavens and philosophy.

There is a very interesting article here about a Urania Cottage for fallen women set up with the help of Charles Dickens. There’s also a book been written about it: Charles Dickens and the House of Fallen Women. Some of the inmates probably provided inspiration for some of the female characters in Dickens’ novels.

Urania is the only room, other than Calliope, that has a queen double instead of a full size double bed. It also has a decorative fireplace, and two large windows overlooking the valley.

The room has its own hallway and exclusive use of a toilet in this hall. It shares the shower upstairs with one other room.

Urania Rates

780 Euros for one person from September to June.

825 Euros for one person in July and August.

Weekly retreat rate for one person: 380 Euros.

As with all our rooms there is an additional 25% charge for couples.

Melpomene – Singing and Tragedy

Melpomene is a large double bedroom adjoining Thalia, with tall French windows overlooking the valley.

Melpomene’s name means “to sing” or “the one that is melodious” in Greek,  from the verb melpomai meaning “to celebrate with dance and song.”

For whatever reason she went from being the Muse of singing to becoming the muse of tragedy.

She is usually depicted with a headgear of cypress, wearing cothurnus – boots traditionally worn by actors – and either holding a knife or club in one hand and the tragic mask in the other.

Melpomene , as with all the other muses at La Muse is the daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne.

The room is also furnished with antiques and a very comfortable love seat.

The shower and toilet are just down the hall. (There are two other public toilets in the house.)

Melpomene Rates

825 Euros for one person from September to June.

880 Euros for one person in July and August.

Weekly retreat rate for one person: 425 Euros.

As with all our rooms there is an additional 25% charge for couples.

Melpomene and  Thalia can be rented together as a bedroom and private study, depending on availability.

Clio – History

Clio is one of our three first-floor rooms.

The muse of history, Clio, as with all our other muse rooms, is a daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne.

She’s often called the Proclaimer. because her name comes from the Greek word “make famous” or “recount.”

Seemingly, she had a son, Hyacinth, although mythology’s not quite sure which king was the father. It could have been Pierus, King of Macedon, Oebalus king of Sparta, or king Amyclas of Sparta.

When represented Clio usually has a parchment scroll or a load of tablets nearby or in her hands. Her name also gives us such words as cliometrics and cliodynamics.

Clio is a double bedroom with an ensuite bathroom (tub, shower and toilet) as well as a decorative fireplace.

It also has two tall French windows which overlook the valley.

Clio Rates

925 Euros for one person from September to June.

1025 Euros for one person in July and August.

Weekly retreat rate for one person: 480 Euros.

There is an additional 25% charge for couples.

Erato – Love Poetry

Erato - Writing Holiday in France - La Muse

Erato…

Erato is our honeymoon suite.

As with all the other muses at La Muse Erato is one of the Greek Muses, a daughter of Mnemosyne and Zeus. Her name means “desired” or “lovely,” and her remains lie in a tomb on the island of Samos.

She is the Muse of lyric poetry, love and erotic poetry to be exact.

Since Renaissance times she’s been depitcted with a wreath of roses and myrtle, holding a lyre, or a small kithara, an instrument either she or Apollo allegedly invented. Other times she’ll be holding a golden arrow, letting us know that she inspires eros.

The room has an ensuite bathroom with a tub, shower and toilet, and a window looking south. The room also has two tall windows facing west over the valley and a decorative marble fireplace.

Erato Rates

980 Euros for one person from September to June.

1025 Euros in July and August.

Weekly retreat rate for one person: 525 Euros.

There is an additional 25% charge for couples.

Euterpe

Euterpe means “rejoicing well” or “delight” from the ancient Greek “well” and “to please.”

As with all our rooms she was named after one of the Muses, the daughters of Mnemosyne and Zeus.

Called the “Giver of delight”, when more recent poets gave roles to each of the Muses, she was assigned as the muse of music.

In Classical times she was also the muse of lyric poetry depicted holding a flute. A few say she invented the aulos or double-flute, although certain writers say Marsyas invented it.

The room shares a toilet with Melpomene and Thalia. (There are two other public toilets in the house.)

Euterpe Rates

880 Euros for one person from September to June.

965 Euros in July and August.

Weekly retreat rate for one person: 480 Euros.

There is an additional 25% charge for couples.

Calliope – Epic Poetry

Calliope…

Calliope - artist residency in Frace - La Muse

Calliope – Entrance looking into the bathroom, bedroom living room

Calliope, or, Kalliopē “beautiful-voiced” in Greek was the muse of epic poetry, and as with all the the other muses at La Muse, she was the daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne.

She also had two well known sons in mythology: Orpheus and Linus, although the father, as with all mythology is often left dubious. One contender is Apollo, the other king Oeagrus of Thrace.

She taught Orpheus how to sing and, according to the Argonautica married Oeagrus close to Pimpleia:

First then let us name Orpheus whom once Calliope bare, it is said, wedded to Thracian Oeagrus, near the Pimpleian height. Men say that he by the music of his songs charmed the stubborn rocks upon the mountains and the course of rivers. And the wild oak-trees to this day, tokens of that magic strain, that grow at Zone on the Thracian shore, stand in ordered ranks close together, the same which under the charm of his lyre he led down from Pieria.

In art she nearly always has a writing tablet in her hand and at times she’s depicted carrying a roll of paper or a book.

Calliope is a double room with its own private living room as well as and ensuite spa bathroom (a deep, long tub with a view of the valley and a separate walk-in shower, all newly renovated).

The salon is well-furnished sitting room with two desks,  a twin-bed settee, two large French windows overlooking the valley, and a wood burning stove in a marble fireplace for your use.

Thalia – Comedy

Thalia - artist residency in France - La Muse

The room…

Thalia - Artist Residency in France - La Muse

Thalia statue at the Prado

Thalia is a large double room with antique furnishings, a decorative fireplace with a large wooden mantle, and two large French windows overlooking the valley.

Of all the muses names Thalia’s has the loveliest meaning: “the joyous, the flourishing”, from the Greek “to flourish, to be verdant.”

She was, is, the Muse of comedy and idyllic poetry. Her songs are supposed to flourish through time, because they are, well idyllic.

As with the other muses at La Muse she was the daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the eighth daughter born of the nine Muses.

She usually has a crown of ivy and wears boots and holds a comic mask in her hand or beside her.

Some of her statues have her holding a bugle and a trumpet. Both these helped actors in ancient comedy.

The character of Thalia Grace in Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series appears to be named after her. There’s a great Roman statue of her, above, from Hadrian’s Villa, presently at the Prado Museum in Madrid.

The room also has a newly renovated walk-in en-suite shower.

This room shares a toilet across the hall with two other rooms.

Thalia Rates

925 Euro for one person from September to June.

1025 Euro in July and August.

There is an additional 25% charge for couples.
