Library

Our living library is on the terrace level of La Muse and is a very spacious room with authentic stone walls - the mountain, huge hand-hewn beams, and a tile floor. The reason we call it a living library is because every retreat the library grows when new residents/attendees donate two or more books to it. These books are always books which have inspired people to write, paint or compose and/or books about where they are from physically and artistically. As you can guess this means La Muse is blessed with many amazing books as they are either written by the people who have been here or are inspired by their friends or home muses! Please check out our blog here to see who has been donating books to the library. For more on our library collection click here.

There are reading chairs, a comfortable sofa, work-tables, a printer, a wood-burning stove and the room opens onto the terrace and gardens through French doors. There’s an adjoining kitchen for use at mealtimes, which alternate with quiet hours to minimize noise in the library. The library has its own WC and an adjacent studio.

The library is La Muse’s primary common workspace. Like any library, it is a place where quiet hours are respected (those working on collaborations can work quietly together in their private rooms), but where people gather in the evenings to read, play Scrabble or Chinese checkers, or to talk about their day. More animated post-dinner conversation is usually kept to the dining room, also off the terrace on the other side of the kitchen. Those who wish to work at night are encouraged to do so in their rooms.
